Traditional Wallpaper Installation Guide

Traditional Wallpaper (Non-Woven & Prepasted) — Installation Guide

Please take a moment to read through this guide before hanging. It is important that you understand the entire process before you start. If you are unsure of any steps, contact us at hello@wallpaperpixi.com — we're happy to help!

For proper adhesion, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from dirt, dust, grease, mildew, or ink stains. For textured or damaged walls, consider using a heavy-duty wallpaper liner. We recommend having two people for installation.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Wipe down the wall with a microfiber cloth to remove dust and dirt
  • Remove nails, screws, and fill any cracks
  • Switch off electricity and remove socket/switch covers
  • Sand down rough areas until smooth
  • Clean walls with warm water and mild soap, then allow to dry for at least 24 hours

Tools you will need

  • "Paste the wall" adhesive (for Non-Woven; not needed for Prepasted)
  • Pasting brush or roller
  • Clean, damp microfiber cloth
  • Measuring tape
  • Spirit level
  • Pencil
  • Exacto knife or paper knife
  • Triangle ruler
  • Smoothing brush or felt-tipped squeegee

Step 1 — Prepare your panels Unroll the wallpaper or mural and separate the panels. Arrange them in hanging order from left to right on the floor. For murals, use the numbers on the back of each panel (always positioned at the bottom) to ensure correct orientation. Repeating patterns can be installed in any order. Align the design to ensure the pattern matches before proceeding.

Step 2 — Line up the first panel Start from the left side of your wall. Use a tape measure and spirit level to mark where Panel 1 should be positioned. With a pencil, create a vertical plumb line from floor to ceiling, then mark a horizontal line 19" from the wall with 1"–2" overhang on the left side of Panel 1.

⚠️ Your wall may not be perfectly straight — do not use it as a reference. Take time to get this right!

Step 3 — Install the first panel For Non-Woven: Using a brush or roller, apply wallpaper paste evenly to the wall surface, covering a few inches past the first marked section. A smooth, even coat is essential to reduce bubbling.

For Prepasted: Simply wet the back of the panel with water to activate the paste — no additional adhesive needed.

Align the first panel with the pencilled guideline and hang from the top, working downwards. Smooth away any bubbles or ripples using the felt-tipped squeegee or microfiber cloth. Avoid pulling or stretching — allow the wallpaper to fall naturally.

Step 4 — Butt up the panels When hanging multiple panels, align edge to edge — do not overlap! Apply paste to the wall (or wet the next panel if Prepasted) and slide the second panel into position. Firmly press panels together to conceal seams. Smooth out air bubbles with the squeegee.

⚠️ If any paste gets on the surface, gently wipe it away immediately with a clean damp microfiber cloth.

Step 5 — Repeat until finished Repeat for all panels. Use a triangle ruler and sharp blade to trim excess from the final drop and top/bottom of all panels. Allow the wallpaper to dry at room temperature with plenty of ventilation.
